Last set of DHH Room pics

More DHH Room pics

Pics of DHH room from site visit

I did my site visit at a mainstream elementary school where I used to work, and I thought you guys might enjoy seeing some pictures of the DHH room to include the Deaf art done by one of the students. There are visual phonics symbols where the alphabet usually is in a teacher's room, and everything in the room is labeled (door, cabinet, light switch, etc.). Practically everywhere you look in that room there's an opportunity to visually learn something or be visually reminded of something you've already learned. Check out all the different ways the DHH teacher uses visible thinking, and the ways she shows appreciation of Deaf culture and Deaf role models including the display of this particular student's artwork (none of these pics are in this post, but will be in the next one). I can only attach about 5 pics at a time, so I'll do the rest on separate posts. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts if you're interested in sharing : )

Test Question

I'm having trouble with test question #10. First of all, is this question asking for the difference between intervention services and preschool programs OR is it asking what the difference is between intervention services/preschool programs for children who are hearing vs. children who are Deaf? Second, does anyone have suggestions about where to find information regarding this question? I've looked through our blackboard links but can't seem to find anything that discusses this.
Only 4 more weeks till finals!!!!!

Test 3?

So, I am one of those people who like to get things done and over with. Well, Today, I have been trying to take this test. I was wondering if anyone who has tried yet has had any problems putting in your answers. I was able to write my answer for question 1, but then when i went to answer question 2 it wont let me do anything. I tried to answer the rest of the questions and nothing. I was just wondering if anyone else had that problem. .... getting very frustrated...

Class yesterday and site visit

I wasn't able to make it to class yesterday so I just had some questions about the site visit. How long/how many hours do we need to visit? Can anybody give me some school options where I can visit?

Keith Wann

http://www.keithwann.com/KW/Videos.html

This guy came to Eastern a few years ago, and was a HUGE hit, apparently. I've watched a few videos, and he really is very funny!

He's kind of crass, so if you're not into that kind of humor, beware.

His website had a bio if you're interested in knowing more about him.
Off the top of my head, I think I remember that he's a hearing kid born to Deaf parents. Most of his comedy is in ASL and is all ASL related. He even does a few songs, I believe. My favorite was "Honkytonk Badonkadonk". He was HILARIOUS!

Site Visit.

I just recently did my site visit at my old High School. I had a very negative experience and was wondering who had positive or negative experiences.

Shout-Out!

Just wanted to post a shout-out to Sarah Gaudinier! Not only do we have SED 337 together, but also ASL 202 and SED 260. It's definitely convenient sharing multiple classes with one person because you can rely on that person for clarification or assistance. I look forward to ASL next semester! Woo (:

Deaf Panel

I am upset that I was not able to go to the deaf panel due to work but I hope that it was beneficial to everyone else. I can't wait to hear about it in class!

Ideas for Research Paper

I am doing a research paper in my EMG 445W class and it's over literacy.  I want my paper to be over deaf students and literacy but I'm not sure exactly how to word my thesis.  I can't get the words on paper that I want.  I want my paper to argue how some schools are allowing deaf students enough education to be on the same literacy level as hearing students.  Does anyone have any ideas or articles I could use?

Panel

I wasn't able to go to the deaf panel because of work which I am really sad about!  I was looking forward to it!  Was anyone able to video it or will we just get a summary in class?

Site Visit Problems

I am having a lot of trouble trying to set up a site visit around here, does anyone know of where I could observe that's not a school? I am in class from 9 to 3 almost everyday and that makes it very hard to go to a school to watch. Plus the schools are giving me the runaround. So if anyone can help please let me know!

Deaf Panel

I really enjoyed the panel and meeting new people. One thing that I loved that was discussed was that as educators we need to foster the deaf kids identity and accept them and their families choices. They are people, who are deaf, and don't want to be seen as the "poor deaf kid." I love what Jeremy said "they can do anything anyone else can do, except hear." It's so true!

PANICKING!!!

I don't see my test as having been submitted! Did anyone else have an issue?

Panel

Hey guys,

I'm looking forward to the comments you guys leave about the panel! I had to work tonight, so I couldn't be there. I hope everyone learned a lot, and posts a lot so that I can see what happened!

Thanks guys!

Excited :)

I'm so excited about tonight's panel. I think this is an awesome idea. See you all there.

Panel Tonight

Hey guys!

Since I have class tonight, I will not be able to come to O'Charley's tonight :( I am really dissappointed about it.

But! I was wondering if anyone could give me some of the things that they thought were the most interesting or thought-provoking statements that they had to say, you could write them on here so that the people that cannot come can still experience it a little bit!

Thanks so much!
And have fun!

The O'Charleys

Hey Guys! Just wanted to remind you about class tomorrow! They know your coming and they SHOULD have everything set up so everyone can see the panel. Have fun! Oh! and try to atleast order something, even if its little. My boss will kill me if we take up a whole room and dont spend money lol

Hard test?

Anyone find the test to be a little hard concerning the handouts? For one of the questions it was hard to figure out which handout to use...

looking for a job?!

Not sure if anyone is currently seeking employment, but I work with (and have for the past 3 years) Lexington Fayette County Parks and Rec with the Extend School Program, ESP, and we are in need of some new counselors! I work at Wellington, the new elementary school in Lexington, and it is wonderful! We only work Monday-Friday and the normal hours of operation are from 2-6. We do also have camps for spring break and summer as well as winter and fall. We obviously work with kids aged Kindergarten to Fifth Grade and it's really great and fun! You would be placed with a certain group - we have 8- and you would work along side another counselor where you would take your group to the gym, computer lab, library, playground, cafeteria to play games, and eat snack. The website is below if you want to check it out!

If anyone is interested I can happily bring you an application :)

Question 4

I am struggling with question 4 can cannot find any strategies in the book for teaching reading and writing jointly. Does anyone have any suggestions of where I could look?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!!

I hope everyone has a great day!! Be safe!!! =)

Opportunity

I'd mentioned in class that we have a young lady who is attending the church where I attend for whom I am signing now.  If any of you are interested in attending the Richmond Campus of Crossroads Christian Church where I'll be signing the services we meet at 10 a.m. each Sunday morning.  We meet at the B. Michael Caudill Middle School that meets out off the Bypass.  The exact address is 1428 Robert R. Martin Bypass.

I'd love to see you there!

site visit

Has anyone completed their site visit yet? How did you go about finding a school with a D/HH child in it? I feel kinda dumb calling up a random school and being like "HEY!" lol... Advice?

Hearing Parents of a Deaf Child

These parents did everything they could do to help their Deaf child be as successful as their hearing peers. Very touching and I love how they didn't just accept when they were told their daughter would graduate with a reading level of a 3rd grader.

Could use some ideas!

Good Morning Guys! :)
I have something I want to bounce off you all:
For my young adult lit class (which is yes, all about young adult authors and reading things that young adults read, and how to bring new yal books into the classroom and connect them to things the students would want to read).
For this class we have a big final project to do, and the first part of it we have to do research on an issue, question, concept, topic, or whatever that we want to know more about that we could relate to young adult lit books. An example of this would be look at the question: how does violence affect young adults? then you do research on violence and then you narrow your search to eating disorders, or cyber bulling, or something. When we finish this research we are then going to use the "topic" to write a big final paper, that concerns what we did research over. So if you did eating disorders you would write a story about a girl with an eating disorder and whatever.
I have been thinking about having my topic be deafness, however, I don't know if I can narrow my search in that enough to be able to write a piece on it.
If anyone has any idea as to how I could narrow my search for deafness and make a story that would have to do with young adults.
I have two weeks to figure this out, so if you think that its kind of pointless or too broad I still have time to change, but just wanted to get some ideas!
Thanks!

Assessment

I feel kind of stupid for not knowing the answer to this but is the handout we use for questions 2 and 3 of the assessment the same? The one with the 15 strategies?

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

:DD

I'm so excited for the panel! (:

Assessment 2 Question

On question 4 (List three specific ways... one of your ideas), are we supposed to use ideas that have been used previously by other teachers of the deaf, or come up with our own plans?

Panel Presentation

Can someone give me a ride to O'Charlies on Tuesday? I don't have a car right now so I have no way to get there. Thanks!

ASL Living Learning Community Coming to EKU!

My fellow RA, Trevor Jenkins, in McGregor Hall has been busting his behind all year to get the university to approve the ASL LLC floor for EKU. He was successful in his efforts and now EKU will be the first school to have any LLC or residence hall living arrangement of the sort in KY that isn't an actual school for the Deaf (like KSD) (or so I've been told--sorry if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am). This floor will become available in the 2013-2014 school year. It will likely be in McGregor or Clay hall, but that is still undecided upon by the university. Also, this floor will work like the rest of the LLC's (where people who live on that floor have declared that major or one that involves many of the same things, and then signs a contract to complete all the duties of being a resident on said LLC) only I believe this LLC will be available to Deaf Ed, ITP, Lang/Com Disorders, ASL Minors, and Deaf studies. (DON'T hold me to this 100% because EKU is still working out some kinks. All I wanted to let you know is that it got approved and is the first of it's kind in KY Academia!) Congrats to Trevor and all his hard work!

Site Visit

So for this assignment does it need to be a whole classroom for Deaf children? Or can it be a mainstreamed setting with one Deaf or hard of hearing child?

Big bang theory

Hey class! I know most of you guys are already enjoying spring break, but I just wanted to let you know that daphne from switched at birth is on big bang theory tonight signing. It is called the wiggly finger catalyst, and they talk about signing with certain tones! It's cool how much deafness and signing has become a norm in today's entertainment

Email notification for additions to the Blog
