Final Exam - Favor
I've posted the Final. This is the first time I've used this many multiple choice questions - especially on a FINAL. But, I've done this by request to prepare students for the Praxis. These relate to what you did for the BONUS questions - so many of you are in GREAT SHAPE!!!!
If for some reason the format doesn't work right or something isn't showing the way it should, please let me know so that we can fix this.
Thank you!
CATHY :)

Final Exam
Hey guys,
You know how some of us printed the prior assessments off, filled them in on paper, and then typed our answers into the actual assessment on BB? Well, since this one is not just short answer/essay questions, are we going to be able to still do that?
Or are we only going to be able to open the assessment once.
Thanks!

It's our last week! I'm pretty excited about that...Then Finals...then summer!
on another note- My mom met Lou Ferringo again yesterday and she decided to play a joke on me and said that he remembered me from when I was a kid...I was tricked lol But she met him again, kevin sorbo from hercules, few Star-Trek people, I wished I had been there!

today's powerpoints
When I go on BB and go to April 9, I see the two powerpoints, but the one that is labeled "from previous semester" is not the one that we looked at today in class. I cannot seem to find the stuff on social/emotional development. Anyone know what my problem is?
5 points extra credit if. . .
you attend ONE of the two time listed below and email me 2-4 sentences of your impression of the SOCIAL interactions of the group or any one student that stood out to you.
11:45- Lunch (All are invited to eat lunch with us however, we know you all are busy.) This would give our students an opportunity to socialize and build language skills. Our school will provide lunch for the students. *this will be at the picnic tables between Powell and the Wallace Building, if it’s wet or raining we will eat on the stage of the Ravine*
12:15- Story and language time in the Ravine *if it rains, we can do this in the Library*
Please post a comment here if you intend on doing this!

When are the extra credit questions due? I know she mentioned it last class but I forgot to write it down and it wasn't included in the email she sent out with all the dues dates. Thanks!
You Available & Interested in Meeting some Elementary Students?
Debbie Haydon has asked if I would have a few students who would be willing to meet with some Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from a mainstream elementary school in Lexington who will be on campus next Tuesday. Read the teacher's message below:
We are bringing our elementary D/HH students to EKU next Tuesday for a field trip to tour the campus and the ASL lab. We will have some down time during the day and we were interested in having the students meet some college students and ask them questions. We are not sure about the exact time yet (probably around mid-day/lunch time). If you know of any students who would like to come and answer questions about being a college student (especially if they know some sign) we would love to have them. If you wouldn’t mind passing the opportunity along to any students who would be interested and we can give you more details as we finalize the trip plans. Thanks!
If you are interested, please email Debbie Haydon to let her know and make arrangements. Please cc me on the email to let me know who is responding.

Fun Easter in the ER(note the sarcasm)
Just getting home from the ER with my 4 year old. She scared us as she has been fine all weekend then all of a sudden she had a fever of 102.8, heart rate of 160, complaining of her back and stomach hurting, with the little grimace face and moaning. So I took her to the ER and they first thought it was a kidney infection, did a urine specimen and it came back fine. So they ordered a ct scan because they were afraid it was her appendix. Turns out her white blood count was 1600 and she has pneumonia in her lower left lung. I had went to the doctor with her a week ago over the cough that wouldn't go away. I was afraid she had mono like me, but they say at 4 she couldn't so they won't test her. It's sad that anymore you have to go to the ER to get treated, but while I was there they seemed to be ct scan happy as there was at least 4 ct scans. They must have just gotten a new machine so they can overcharge all the insurance companys. Ok rant over. I hope you all had a great Easter!
Hey everyone, Wendy Zimmerman is looking for interpreters to sign the National Anthem at some Legends baseball games this summer.
Once again I will be coordinating the interpreters for the National Anthem at the Lexington Legends games. Attached is the schedule of home games. Please let me know if you are interested in interpreting at any of these games. You will receive 4 passes to the game (one that you have to use for yourself) in exchange for interpreting the National Anthem. Lots of fun!!!

Soapbox
Just as a comment on our class, I really liked the use of Soapbox during class. I think it made class a lot better instead of trying to just sit and figure it all out. I like the hands on approach to the material. What did you guys think?
Reminder
Don't forget! Last I heard, University Housing is still going to administer a Deaf LLC for Deaf Ed, Deaf Studies, ITP, etc. during the school year of 2013-2014. I know it's still a ways away still, but it is exciting and incredibly unique! Please keep this in mind so when the time comes, we will be a success! Thanks!
Interesting Article

This is pretty interesting!
This is pretty interesting!
FYI
Hey guys! We only have 4 weeks left!!! I know those of you who live on campus have probably already re-contracted for housing if you are living on campus again, but I
really wanted to just remind everyone of the Education LLC. I know not
everyone in the class is an education major, but those who are listen
up: We would LOVE to have you! I am one of the RA's for the girl's
education floor in McGregor. We usually fill up the girls floors, but
the guy's floor seems to be disappearing. We would love to see the guys
step up and represent the major on this floor. Just consider it, please.
Of course, girls, you are also welcome to look into it for next year or
even the year after that, everyone is! Just don't forget it's there!
Extra Credit !
I just finished the praxis extra credit questions and I don't know about you guys, but it was exciting looking at the questions and actually already knowing some! Sadly, Ive got two more semesters before I take the Praxis for real... I am beyond ready to finish up and graduate!!

Having a Tough Time
Well I just needed a place to vent and talk about some troubles that I am having. I am really having trouble with the thought of coming back to school or not after the summer. I am really considering beauty school, so I would be learning something else totally but still in school. I just don't know what to do. I love kids and I want to work with them somehow, but I don't know if teaching is for me, the issue is that I am a jr and I haven't been admitted into the program yet. I am currently waiting to hear back from the school. I was just needing to vent about this all. If you have any thoughts I would love to hear them. I think that my biggest problem is that I am burnt out on school. Ugh, I just wish I had it all figured out like I thought I did... :(

Thought this was interesting
Children acquire language without instruction as long as they are regularly and meaningfully engaged with an accessible human language. Today, 80% of children born deaf in the developed world are implanted with cochlear devices that allow some of them access to sound in their early years, which helps them to develop speech. However, through early childhood, brain plasticity changes and children who have not acquired a first language in the early years might never be completely fluent in any language. If they miss this critical period for exposure to a natural language, their subsequent development of the cognitive activities that rely on a solid first language might be underdeveloped, such as literacy, memory organization, and number manipulation. An alternative to speech-exclusive approaches to language acquisition exists in the use of sign languages such as American Sign Language (ASL), where acquiring a sign language is subject to the same time constraints of spoken language development. Unfortunately, so far, these alternatives are caught up in an "either - or" dilemma, leading to a highly polarized conflict about which system families should choose for their children, with little tolerance for alternatives by either side of the debate and widespread misinformation about the evidence and implications for or against either approach. The success rate with cochlear implants is highly variable. This issue is still debated, and as far as we know, there are no reliable predictors for success with implants. Yet families are often advised not to expose their child to sign language. Here absolute positions based on ideology create pressures for parents that might jeopardize the real developmental needs of deaf children. What we do know is that cochlear implants do not offer accessible language to many deaf children. By the time it is clear that the deaf child is not acquiring spoken language with cochlear devices, it might already be past the critical period, and the child runs the risk of becoming linguistically deprived. Linguistic deprivation constitutes multiple personal harms as well as harms to society (in terms of costs to our medical systems and in loss of potential productive societal participation).
