These parents did everything they could do to help their Deaf child be as successful as their hearing peers. Very touching and I love how they didn't just accept when they were told their daughter would graduate with a reading level of a 3rd grader.

Could use some ideas!
Good Morning Guys! :)
I have something I want to bounce off you all:
For my young adult lit class (which is yes, all about young adult authors and reading things that young adults read, and how to bring new yal books into the classroom and connect them to things the students would want to read).
For this class we have a big final project to do, and the first part of it we have to do research on an issue, question, concept, topic, or whatever that we want to know more about that we could relate to young adult lit books. An example of this would be look at the question: how does violence affect young adults? then you do research on violence and then you narrow your search to eating disorders, or cyber bulling, or something. When we finish this research we are then going to use the "topic" to write a big final paper, that concerns what we did research over. So if you did eating disorders you would write a story about a girl with an eating disorder and whatever.
I have been thinking about having my topic be deafness, however, I don't know if I can narrow my search in that enough to be able to write a piece on it.
If anyone has any idea as to how I could narrow my search for deafness and make a story that would have to do with young adults.
I have two weeks to figure this out, so if you think that its kind of pointless or too broad I still have time to change, but just wanted to get some ideas!
Thanks!

Assessment
I feel kind of stupid for not knowing the answer to this but is the handout we use for questions 2 and 3 of the assessment the same? The one with the 15 strategies?

Assessment 2 Question
On question 4 (List three specific ways... one of your ideas), are we supposed to use ideas that have been used previously by other teachers of the deaf, or come up with our own plans?

Panel Presentation
Can someone give me a ride to O'Charlies on Tuesday? I don't have a car right now so I have no way to get there. Thanks!

ASL Living Learning Community Coming to EKU!
My fellow RA, Trevor Jenkins, in McGregor Hall has been busting his behind all year to get the university to approve the ASL LLC floor for EKU. He was successful in his efforts and now EKU will be the first school to have any LLC or residence hall living arrangement of the sort in KY that isn't an actual school for the Deaf (like KSD) (or so I've been told--sorry if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am). This floor will become available in the 2013-2014 school year. It will likely be in McGregor or Clay hall, but that is still undecided upon by the university. Also, this floor will work like the rest of the LLC's (where people who live on that floor have declared that major or one that involves many of the same things, and then signs a contract to complete all the duties of being a resident on said LLC) only I believe this LLC will be available to Deaf Ed, ITP, Lang/Com Disorders, ASL Minors, and Deaf studies. (DON'T hold me to this 100% because EKU is still working out some kinks. All I wanted to let you know is that it got approved and is the first of it's kind in KY Academia!) Congrats to Trevor and all his hard work!

Site Visit
So for this assignment does it need to be a whole classroom for Deaf children? Or can it be a mainstreamed setting with one Deaf or hard of hearing child?

Big bang theory
Hey class! I know most of you guys are already enjoying spring break, but I just wanted to let you know that daphne from switched at birth is on big bang theory tonight signing. It is called the wiggly finger catalyst, and they talk about signing with certain tones! It's cool how much deafness and signing has become a norm in today's entertainment
Email notification for additions to the Blog
Many of you have blogged about wanting email notification when something is added to the blog. I THINK I found a way to add a web part or a gadget to the site that will allow you to "subscribe" to receive email notifications. See the top right hand column. Try it out and let me know!
