Deaf Panel
I really enjoyed the panel and meeting new people. One thing that I loved that was discussed was that as educators we need to foster the deaf kids identity and accept them and their families choices. They are people, who are deaf, and don't want to be seen as the "poor deaf kid." I love what Jeremy said "they can do anything anyone else can do, except hear." It's so true!

I also enjoyed the panel even though I had issues hearing everyone talk and paying attention because of everything else going on. But I do believe it was a great experience! I also really like the quote you listed above. It is important to always keep that in mind.

ReplyDeleteI had never heard the statistic that Jenna's mom shared about girls who are Deaf getting raped. That absolutely broke my heart!

ReplyDeleteI forget the actual statistics, but most deaf individuals, and I say individuals because it happens to both males and females, will not come forward because of communication. Also many times it is someone that is close to the individual. Their is training for people who work with deaf individuals who have been involved in domestic violence. They even discuss certain signs that could be traumatic; I suggest everyone become more aware as you never know who you could come in contact with or could help, if you have the proper training.
