Songs and videos
I saw where there's a couple post with YouTube
Videos of signing different songs! There was a girl that was in the ITP
Program here at EKU that used I post multiple videos of her signing songs. I can't seem to find it anymore but as soon as I do I will post a link! Why I was trying to find get I came across all of the EKU ASL students who post
Re-tell stories an it's cool to go back and watch the different stories we have to do and how other students sign them differently!
KSD
I am doing a paper for my ASL 225 class over KSD and can't find a lot of information on its current services/plans/ect. Does anybody have any ideas on where I could get info? Their website doesn't seem to be working either.

Again, good pace, and popular song, so you might find it helps to already know the words to the song. Then, you can concentrate on the body movement and facial expression. HINT HINT lol :)

Signing Practice Tip: Sign with Music
I know that many people perhaps may disagree with me on this, since Deaf people may not be able to do the same, but I find that trying to sign to my music helps me improve. As a hearing person, I find that music helps me improve my speed, because you have to keep up with the song, it helps improve with body movement because you into the music so you dance and pretend to perform (don't lie--we all do! lol). Also, it helps me improve my vocabulary because of all the different lyrics in the song. So, I figured I'd use my posts to show some signed songs to help you guys since they already have the signs in them, also, some that I have found particularly easy to sign, like starters. Give it a try!

Mentoring a deaf class
I am currently mentoring a deaf class, and it is the most amazing thing I've witnessed in a long time. The teacher I am mentoring is phenomenal and she cares so much about her students and how they are progressing. Shes given me a great insight to what the classroom setting in public schools is like. The students are amazing, and are so thrilled I am there working with them and know sign. It truly showed me I made the right choice in choosing deaf education. Just mentoring this classroom has been a rewarding experience!

Hilarious.

P.S. I swear I have a life. I just love watching ASL YouTube videos when I have time. (:
Douglas Tilden Presentation:
We didn't get to view my video during class, so I'm posting it here in case you're interested!
Visual Phonemics
I don't know about anyone else, but I REALLY liked the video. I would love to know more about how it works, how the technique shows children who are Deaf or HH HOW to form the word without them actually being able to experience that sound aurally. It reminded me of Alexander Graham Bell's work on speech and sound.
Hi Everyone! Mark this on your calendar.
On Saturday, March 17th from 10-2 the ITP 215W classes are hosting a Deaf Panel discussion about interpreting services. There will be a social, with food after the discussion. It will be on campus, but we don't know the exact location just yet.
I think it is for other students as well, and not limited to 215W. I will double check with the teacher to clarify.

Intro to 15 Principles to Reading to Deaf Children
Check out this Intro! We'll do the 15 Principles in class.
LAPTOPS TO CLASS
If you have a laptop please bring it to class on Monday, February 27th. I have found video clips to go along with my ASL Reading sheet!

Grading
I have been grading this week and will be all weekend. Please check Blackboard off and on if you're interested in your grades. If you have ANY questions please do not hesitate to email/text/call and let me know. You know I'm open to discussing and changing grades based on conversations and your explanations on something I may have missed or misunderstood.
I want to encourage you as we go forward to use the material on Blackboard in the Assignments area to guide your development of work. I post material there for your assistance and to help you understand the purpose of the assignment as well as to how to create it. It is also there to show you how I will evaluate your work.

Deaf Panel
The class overwhelmingly voted - with 24 people voting for Option 2 - to cancel one of our day classes and having the panel come in the evening. So, class will be canceled on Monday, March 12th. We ARE having class on the 12th! It's cancelled on the 19th! Instead we will meet on Tuesday night, March 20th at O'Charley's. I am going to work with them to have a separate room.
I currently have parents (one Deaf, one hearing who have a Deaf son) coming in addition to a hearing mother of a Deaf child. I have a 2 other confirmed Deaf panelist and there may be more now that it is in the evening.
I know you are in for a TREAT!!
We will meet at 6:30 and have informal conversation. If you do not sign there are others who will interpret for you. We will order our food and have the formal panel begin at 7:00 p.m.
I know you will learn more in this ONE EVENING than in many of our other classes combined. I may even provide an extra credit opportunity in a reflection on what you gained from the panel.
More details in class.
201 and "One Fine Day"
ASL 201 students,
There are a few examples of "One Fine Day" on YouTube. They aren't exactly like the one we've practiced, but it will help if you need any of the signs refreshed. (:

Switched at Birth question?
I know that some of you watch the show Switched at Birth on ABC Family, and it is on right now :) but anyways, as I was watching, I started to think about Monday's class and the language choices and communication modes that we talked about. I have not taken ASL yet, and I was wondering if they use strictly ASL on the show or if some MCE is used?

Alyssa I couldn't agree more with you! I felt like I was in third grade again! My memory didn't remember anything! Thank goodness she reviewed :)
Mrs White!
Jeremy said he would be able to do an evening panel, but he couldn't make it during the day bc of work! ! :)
Grammar
Wow, I definitely did not remember many of the grammatical terms we went over toaday! I need to go back and look those over!

Needing some prayer.
I know that this has completely nothing to do with class or anything related to it but I am in need of some prayer. I have been going through a custody battle for almost 11 months. on the 1st will be 11 months. The 1st is also my final hearing date. I am hoping to get my daughter back permanently and just need some prayers that I do get her back. Visitation has been killing me because I only get her roughly 26 hours a week if they cooperate.
AFTEC
This does not directly relate to Deaf Education but I volunteer with AFTEC which is an Equine Therapeutic Riding program for children with disabilities. The instructor works with kids of all kinds of backgrounds and disabilities while riding horses. For anyone that is interested in learning more their website is www.aftec.us. This program was great and is a great opportunity for people to work with kids and horses.

Beethoven
I thought it would be a cool idea to do a little research on Beethoven because I thought that even though he didn't lose his hearing until he was an adult, that he definitely sets an example to anyone that boundaries only exist if you make them! He composed some of his best symphonies while being completely Deaf! In school I was told that he sawed the legs off a piano so that he could lay on the floor and absorb the vibrations of the music! I find that to be incredibly amazing! He's one of the best composers of all time and he lost his hearing by the time he was 27! I think it's a good thing to keep in mind when educating any child...that those boundaries only exist because we've created them. Three cheers for Symphony No. 5!

Helen Keller :)
"No deaf child who has earnestly tried to speak the words which he has never heard-to come out of the prison of silence, where no tone of love, no song of bird, no strain of music ever pierces the stillness-can forget the thrill of surprise, the joy of discovery which came over him when he uttered his first word." - Helen Keller
I know speaking vs. signing is a huge debate and that is not why I put this up here. Currently, I am reading Helen Keller's autobiography. She is my hero and she is actually the reason why I wanted to become a teacher for the Deaf. I thought this was a beautiful quote and it is about her first lesson on speaking. She was very excited to learn how to speak and I love that.
Anyway, I just thought it was beautiful and if any of you ever have the time you should definitely pick up her book. It is amazing! :)

What did I miss?
So, I missed class today, and I am kinda outta the loop. I don't know whats up with all the stuff about the debate in class? can anyone fill me in?
Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I had a very hard time sitting through class today without getting upset. I am fully aware that I am not a teacher yet, but I think there is an appropriate way (as well as an inappropriate way) of speaking to a class of students. During the debate I felt as though Ms. White was accusing the class of not understanding what it's like to have a child who is deaf and attempting to "write the script of others." The word YOU was constantly used throughout her lecture, and the words YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND in a harsh voice concluded her speech. I think it is extremely important for future educators to learn that their job is to teach and not to parent. I also believe it's important for current teachers to make students aware of common mistakes that could happen rather than accusing them of already making them. Like I said- maybe I was just easily irritated today, but I felt as though I was being talked down to and scolded.
Debates on ASL
I had difficulty with arguing my side during our ASL debate. Mostly because I was supporting the side of the extreme that I don't side with. I wanted to be arguing for a personal choice approach to the argument, but of course, we were working with extremes. I liked the different choices in reasoning approaches, though.
ABC Family
Does anyone follow the ABC family show "Switched at Birth" regularly? I don't watch it regularly, but I was wondering if it's educationally significant at all? From what I've watched on the channel and the previews, I'm not sure if I would want to watch it...I might get addicted! Is it worth catching up on?
KSD Video
I enjoyed watching the KSD video in class...so much so in fact, that I plugged in earphones at my computer and watched it here to see it better. (It was so small!) I love that the kids are signing...it makes the video reach you on a more personal level.

Group Presentations
I've really enjoyed all the presentations so far. Learned some new and interesting facts about these historical Deaf figures. Our group made one about Lou Ferrigno, a hard of hearing actor and bodybuilder. Looking forward to watching the rest of the presentations on Monday.
My introduction
Hi, my name is Lindsay Bryant. I am finally getting the hang
Of this blog thing. I am 21 and a senior here at EKU. My major is Middle School Education with a Science/Social Studies concentrations. My minor is American Sign Language. I never thought when I came to EKU that I would
choose ASL as a minor. I first became interested in ASL when I was younger and my Dad bought me a folder that had te ASL alphabet on the front. I quickly learned it and showed all my friends! I never really went on from there until I came here to EKU. What made me want to take ASL was when I joined a sorority my freshman year one of my sisters was a Deaf Education major. It took my a full year
To even register for ASL 101 because it was so popular but one I took it I was hooked! I am so lucky to be able to communicate with the deaf as I have loved every second of Deaf education I have learned. I can't wait to use my ASL knowledge to further others in their deaf education.

Trouble Commenting!
I know some other people have had trouble commenting and I was wondering if anyone found a solution. This is the first time I have had trouble on here so I have no clue what is wrong. Thanks to anyone that has an idea!!
In case you are bored!
When we were doing our project on Marlee Matlin I had a clip of her on Dancing with the Stars that we could not get into the video. :( But it is amazing to see her dance and if any of you get bored check this out! She is GREAT!

Information from Envelope activity
I will type the information from the cards in today's envelope activity tomorrow evening and make that available for you to use on the assessment.
Assessment
Hey guys,
I wasn't able to make it to class today, but I know that the assessment was supposed to be made available today, but there is nothing in the assessment folder on Blackboard.
Did she say anything about it today in class?
Or am I just missing it completely?
Thanks!

Group Projects
I really enjoyed seeing the group projects today! Everyone really did a good job thinking of different ways to present the information. :) Specially looking at different deaf people who are famous. Marlee Matlin is a very outspoken women so I knew some information about her, but it was still interesting to see the way that her information was presented!
Reflection
For whatever reason it is not letting me upload my paper on Blackboard, so here it is:
I think that I am in some ways similar to Marlee Matlin. One way is that even though she is a famous actress she is a down to earth person. She does not let her fame give her a big head. She likes to give back to her community and works a lot with organizations. Though I am not famous I have been in positions of power in work situations and have not let them go to my head. Like Marlee I work hard for what I want and do not let anything stop me from getting what I want.

I actually enjoyed this project with my group. There are so many hard of hearing/deaf individuals who have made themselves famous regardless of their hearing loss. We decided to do Lou Ferrigno who stars in the move; The Incredible Hulk. This guy is amazing! He has made so much of his life. Lou has a few kids of his own and a wife. The Hulk was his big movie that brought him out in Hollywood. Lou and his wife offer personal training sessions outside of L.A and love it. The kids are hearing and so is his wife. I enjoyed my group and everyones willingness to work together to put together a great presentation.

Class on February 6th
A few notes for class this week! I need each group to send me their group members and the link to their video on YouTube PRIOR to class.
Once we view all of the videos we will continue class with activities on chapters 3 & 4. Bring a laptop to class if you have one.

Heart Awareness Month

As some of you may know, February is Heart Awareness Month. What some of you may not know is February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness week. Every 15 min a baby is born with a congenital heart defect . 4,000 of them will not live to celebrate their 1st Birthday . I pray and hope just like every other parent who has a child born with a congenital heart defect that more awareness comes soon . Their is no cures only repaires or broken hearts ! 1 out of 100 babies are born with a CHD, my daughter is one.
Although a child is born every 15 minutes with a CHD, research continues to be grossly under-funded in America. Of every dollar the government spends on medical funding, only a fraction of a penny is directed toward congenital heart defect ...research.
We Need More Awareness for our Babies and families ....
Join me and many other by spreading awareness for these CHD warriors, angels, and all of those affected by a CHD and wear RED for CHD awareness week.
hola
super excited to see everyone's videos.. mostly because ours was quite entertaining.. well to make atleast!lol
