Helen Keller :)

"No deaf child who has earnestly tried to speak the words which he has never heard-to come out of the prison of silence, where no tone of love, no song of bird, no strain of music ever pierces the stillness-can forget the thrill of surprise, the joy of discovery which came over him when he uttered his first word." - Helen Keller

I know speaking vs. signing is a huge debate and that is not why I put this up here. Currently, I am reading Helen Keller's autobiography. She is my hero and she is actually the reason why I wanted to become a teacher for the Deaf. I thought this was a beautiful quote and it is about her first lesson on speaking. She was very excited to learn how to speak and I love that.
Anyway, I just thought it was beautiful and if any of you ever have the time you should definitely pick up her book. It is amazing! :)

  2. I love Helen Keller as well! I teach my 7 and 8 year old cousins sign language and they retain so much at this age but the 7 year old is doing a project on Helen Keller! I am so excited for her!

  3. I am glad I am not the only one! :) I always feel silly explaining to people that Helen Keller is what got my interested in this field! I have just always thought she did so many amazing things, even with being both blind and Deaf! I hope I can accomplish half of what she did!
