Introduction

When I first saw this picture in my Deaf Culture I class, it made me think of a Deaf boy I went to church with. He didn't have an Interpreter and no one could sign. I only knew my abc's and a few other signs. He would often come to church just to draw on the chalk board while the lessons went on around him. He wasn't included and I'm sure felt very isolated. But he still came. Moving from Florida to Kentucky I have met many Deaf friends and they have taught me ASL and I changed my major from Ultrasound tech to Interpreting. I now interpret at my church in Danville so that the Deaf members can be a part of the service. I often think of that boy and even had the opportunity to discuss with some members of my old church about getting him an interpreter. I am in this class to learn more about educating the Deaf, but also as it is a requirement for my major. I am a wife, mother of 3 lively little girls who are 10, 7, and 4 and they all can sign somewhat, some more than others.

  1. Thanks for sharing the picture! I first learned sign language because of a girl who came to my church and with whom I became friends. I started at 13 signing things at church for her . . . and the rest. . . as they say is HISTORY!
