Welcome to the Class Blog. The blog will be used in a variety ways for this course. It will be a part of our weekly preparation for small group activities which will occur in class. It will also be a central place to share ideas, questions and resources with your classmates. One of the main ways it will be used is to foster communication among the class.
To get started post a brief introduction of yourself and share a memorable experience you have had with someone who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing, sign language or why you have chosen to take this course.
Hello everyone my name is Jessica Lykins I am a junior here at EKU. I am majoring in Elementary Special Education with a minor in American Sign Language. I am taking this course because it is required for my minor. However, I love ASL it is such a beautiful language.
ReplyDeleteI am a manager at Plato's Closet in Lexington and surprising we get a lot of customers in the store that are deaf. It is nice to be able to use my ASL skills that I have learned at EKU to provide them with the same equal customers service that a hearing person gets. I think the deaf customers that come into the store also appreciate being able to communicate with them rather than having to write everything down on paper. I am really looking forward to this class because I enjoy ASL and would like to learn more about the deaf and their culture. I am also looking forward to having another class with Mrs. White again she is a great teacher.
Hi everyone my name is Brittany Cooper. I have the same exact major and minor as Jessica. I am so ready for this class to start. I had class with Mrs. White and Jessica last semester. She is an awesome teacher I really learned a lot from her.
ReplyDeleteWe were assigned to do this blog last year and it really helped alot. I'm looking forward to see how this blog will grow this semester.
I have been interested in sign language since i was younger and I'm happy that i am finally getting to take it and learn about the culture and language. I usually see or talk to at least one deaf or hard of hearing person a week. These classes I'm taking at EKU have prepared me and helped communicate more than i ever thought i could. I love communicating and helping people so this is perfect for me. Good luck to everyone see you in class tomorrow :)
My name is Mariah Owens and I am a Nursing major and an American Sign Language minor. I have enjoyed ASL since I was in elementary school and I love how beautiful it is. I am not very advanced in the language just yet... I have only taken ASL 101 and 102. I really think the ASL will really help me when I become a nurse as well.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet had an experience with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person (outside of EKU), but I am excited to do so! I chose to take this class because I am interested in Deaf culture, not just their language. Majoring in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Elementary Education is my plan if nursing doesn't work out. I can't wait for class!!!
Hi everyone my name is Amanda Holloran. I am a criminal justice major with a minor in ASL. I really enjoy sign language and look forward to learning more about it in this class.
ReplyDeleteOne expereince that stands out in my mind that I had with a deaf person was last winter break at my job back home. I was able to help a deaf customer who was having trouble communicating with a co worker.
Hi! My name is Stephanie Harp and I am working towards a duel major in Elementary Ed/ Special Ed: DHH.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend from the time I was in second grade up until about 2 years ago (we had a falling out) was a child to parents who were both Deaf. Growing up I spent a great deal of time being around not only her parents who were Deaf, but as well as some of their friends and family members who were also Deaf. I am also close to my cousin(who is hearing) and her Deaf husband, who were married in May 2011. Being around them allows me to practice and learn ASL constantly. I love it and cannot wait to be able to one day, hopefully soon, teach to children who may be deaf or hard of hearing.
My name is Brittany Robbins. I am majoring in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (P-12) Teaching. I have always had an interest in sign language. I am currently in ASL 102 so I am not that fluent in the language yet. I love ASL and I can't wait to learn more about ASL and the Deaf culture.
ReplyDeleteDuring my EDF 203 class we had to do a 15 hour mentoring project. I live in a small town about 2 hours from Richmond. I chose to do my project with the two Deaf students in our county. When I went to the class I absolutely fell in love with those students. I also soon found out that their families could not sign at all. So their only source of communication was their DHH teacher at school. This experience really inspired me to learn ASL so I could be an available person for Deaf children that do not have anyone. I can't wait to be a teacher for the Deaf and I am so excited to get this class started. This is just one step closer to my goal! :) Good luck to everyone.
Hi everyone! My name is Alyssa Waitzman. I am a sophomore majoring in Occupational Science and minoring in ASL. I started using sign language a few years ago when I began working at a daycare for children with special needs. Originally, I mostly just used simple signs with children with Autism and Down syndrome, which inspired me to continue learning the language. We only have one child at the daycare who is Deaf and he is only a toddler, so I look forward to communicating with him in the future and hopefully teaching him as he gets older.
ReplyDeleteHi guys, my name is Ally Page. I am a freshman double majoring in deaf education and communication disorders with a minor in ASL.
ReplyDeleteI first became interested in ASL when I was in second grade and have wanted to be a teacher for the deaf ever since. I don't have a lot of experience with the deaf culture but I can't wait to learn!
I posted this the wrong way..but here it is.
ReplyDeleteFirst Post- Introduction
My name is Bronwyn Fisher and i am a hard of hearing person. I have friends who are deaf and we all know sign language. I wasn't born deaf but at the age of 2, I became deaf. That is when I attended the A.G. Bell school, also known as the Alexander Graham Bell school in Ohio. I learned sign language from then on. I grew up learning English sign language until I met most of my friends and adopted into the ASL language. So that makes me a Pigeon. A PSE language learner.
The reason why I am in this class is because I need it for my degree. I am in the Deaf Education Major because after interning in a preschool deaf setting, I became fascinated by how one teaches a deaf child. And it made me feel as if I belonged in that setting because we spoke the same language.
I hope this will be a interesting and fun class.

Hi! My name is Beverly and I am an Elementary Education major. I haven't had any real world experience with deaf or hard of hearing children. However, my best friend's 18 month old child was born deaf and my niece had children in her very first classroom that were deaf. After hearing about her students and her difficulty communicating with them, I decided I wanted to take ASL.
ReplyDeleteI took ASL at a community college in Lexington for a year, and I am currently taking more ASL now. I enjoy it a lot, and I was hoping this class would be beneficial for my major as well as a segway between my major and my desire to learn ASL.
Hi, my name is Jessica Trainer but everyone calls me Jessi. I am a Interpreting major, theater and sign language minor. I was not born deaf but mute. It took almost 5 years of therapy but have managed to be able to speak. My older brother is deaf so I grew up learning sign language even though it is now considered english sign. I want to learn different forms and different languages of sign language over the years.
ReplyDeleteI hope this class helps me become a better interpreter and help more people bridge the gap of communication.
Hello, my name is Elise Kitchen, and I am an ASLIE (Interpreting) major. This class is required for the major, but it's also an interesting subject to me. I used to work as an aide in the Special Ed. Dept. of a mainstream school where I found it necessary to be creative in finding ways to effectively communicate with, motivate and teach students with a variety of different special needs, including some Deaf and HH students. I started learning ASL when I worked with a low-functioning autistic student in Kindergarten and continued to learn through community education programs and persistent pestering of anyone I found who had the knowledge I needed :). Finally after a couple ASL classes at BCTC, I decided to bite the bullet and go full time to get a degree in Interpreting (or possibly Deaf Studies if I don't get accepted into the program in the spring). I already have a BA from Berea College, so it's a little easier this time around in some respects :).
ReplyDeleteHi. My name is Alisha Fowler and I am majoring in Special Education: IECE with a minor in ASL. I have always been interested in ASL since Elementary School when my 1st grade class performed a song in ASL in front of the school. I am currently taking ASL 202, so I have had a some experience with ASL, and interacting with Deaf people. I also had a cousin who suffered from Hurler's Disease which made her hard of hearing and she would have eventually went Deaf, but she passed away before she was 2. Where I work we also teach the children basic signs, it allows them to communicate with us before they are able to tell us what they need. It's a rewarding experience.
ReplyDeleteHey everyone! My name is Tessa Cash. My major is Deaf and Hard of Hearing with Elementary Education Teaching. I first learned some sign language at daycare when I was in elementary school. The only thing I remembered was the alphabet until I took ASL 101 last semester. I find ASL to be fascinating and a great way to communicate. I don't recall having a memorable experience with any deaf or hard of hearing person but I hope to make some in the near future as I continue towards receiving my degree!
